Shielded Signal Control Cable - Clean Signals in Noisy Plants
A plant is full of electromagnetic noise - VFD drives switching at kilohertz, motors humming, welders sparking, power cables running parallel to signal trays. A 4-20 mA instrument loop or a 10 mV thermocouple signal has almost no headroom against that noise, so without shielding the reading at the PLC is not the reading at the sensor. A shielded signal control cable wraps the signal conductors in a conductive shield connected to ground, diverting external interference to ground before it reaches the signal. The type of shield - foil, braid, foil+braid, individual pair or overall - determines how much noise is rejected and at what frequency. This page explains each shield type, how to ground it correctly, and how to choose the right one for your noise environment.

EMI Rejection

Foil, braid or foil+braid blocks interference.

4 Shield Types

Foil, braid, foil+braid, individual pair.

Shielding Effectiveness

Up to ~80 dB with foil+braid.

Drain Wire

Tinned copper drain for reliable grounding.

2 – 30 Core

Single pair to multi-pair shielded.

Global Standards

BS 5308, IEC 60189, EN 50288, UL 2464.

Shield Types - Foil, Braid, Foil+Braid, Individual Pair

The shield is the defining feature of a shielded signal control cable. Each type has a different coverage, shielding effectiveness (SE) and mechanical trade-off.

Foil Overall

~40 dB
shielding effectiveness
100% coverage, flexible, low cost. Best for high-frequency EMI and general industrial signals.

Braid Overall

~60 dB
shielding effectiveness
80–90% coverage, low resistance, robust. Best for low-frequency EMI and mechanically demanding runs.

Foil + Braid

~80 dB
shielding effectiveness
95%+ coverage, highest SE. Best for high EMI, analog instruments, long runs near power cables.

IPS (Per Pair)

pair-to-pair
isolation
Foil around each pair. Eliminates crosstalk. Best for mixed analog + digital signals in one cable.

Shield Type Coverage SE (typical) Flexibility Cost Best For
Foil overall 100% ~40 dB High Low General industrial signals, high-frequency EMI
Braid overall 80–90% ~60 dB Medium Medium Low-frequency EMI, motors, VFD, mechanical abuse
Foil + braid ≥ 95% ~80 dB Low High High EMI, analog 4-20 mA, long runs near power
Individual pair (IPS) 100% per pair pair isolation Low High Mixed analog + digital, multi-thermocouple
IPS + overall 100% + overall isolation + EMI Lowest Highest Worst-case: mixed signals in high EMI

Noise Environment → Shield Selection

Match the shield to where the cable runs. The noisier the environment, the heavier the shielding required.

Environment Noise Source Recommended Shield
Office / control room Low Foil overall (or unscreened)
General factory floor Motors, contactors Foil overall
Near VFD / servo drives High-frequency switching EMI Foil + braid
Near power cables / transformers 50/60 Hz low-frequency EMI Braid overall
Welding area Very high broadband EMI Foil + braid
Mixed analog + digital in one cable Internal crosstalk Individual pair shield (IPS)
Worst-case: high EMI + mixed signals External + internal IPS + overall shield

FAQ

Q: What is a shielded signal control cable?

A:A shielded signal control cable is a cable for analog or digital control signals that is wrapped in a conductive shield - aluminium foil, tinned copper braid, or both - to reject external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and prevent the signal from radiating. The shield is bonded to a drain wire for grounding. Shielding is essential when the cable runs near power cables, motors, VFD drives, welders or other noise sources, or when it carries low-level analog signals (4-20 mA, mV sensors) that would otherwise be corrupted.

Q: What is the difference between foil, braid and foil+braid shield?

A: Foil shield is a thin aluminium wrap with 100% coverage. It is cheap, flexible and good for high-frequency EMI, but its shielding effectiveness is around 40 dB and it is easily damaged. Braid shield is a woven tinned copper sleeve with typically 80–90% coverage. It is more robust, lower resistance and gives around 60 dB shielding effectiveness at lower frequencies. Foil+braid combines both for the highest coverage (95%+) and the best shielding effectiveness, around 80 dB, at the cost of stiffness and price. For general industrial signals use foil; for high EMI or mechanically demanding runs use braid or foil+braid.

Q: How should a shielded signal control cable be grounded?

A: The shield should be grounded at one end only for analog and low-frequency digital signals, to avoid ground loops that inject noise. The preferred end is the signal-receiving end (the PLC or instrument input), but the key rule is one end only. For high-speed digital buses (Ethernet, some fieldbuses) and where the shield must also control radiated emissions, 360° grounding at both ends is sometimes used, but only when the ground potential difference between ends is very low. Never ground the shield at both ends on long runs where ground potential differences exist.

Q: What is individual pair shielding and when do I need it?

A: Individual pair shielding (IPS) puts a separate foil shield (and drain wire) around each twisted pair inside the cable, in addition to or instead of an overall shield. IPS eliminates crosstalk between pairs, so it is needed when the cable carries mixed signal types - for example analog 4-20 mA signals alongside digital RS485 data, or multiple thermocouple channels in one cable. For cables carrying one signal type only (all analog or all digital), an overall shield is usually sufficient.

Q: What standards apply to shielded signal control cable?

A: The main standards are BS 5308 (British instrumentation cable - Part 1 overall shielded, Part 2 individual pair shielded), IEC 60189 (low-frequency analog signal cables), EN 50288 (European instrumentation and control cables) and UL 2464 (North American multi-conductor electronic cable). CPR EN 50575 applies for the fire class of the jacket in Europe. The shield coverage, drain wire resistance and grounding continuity are verified against these standards.

Q:What is the MOQ and lead time for shielded signal control cable?

A:MOQ is 10000 m for standard shielded signal control cable (e.g. 1 pair 0.50 mm², overall foil shielded, grey PVC) and  for individual pair shielded (IPS), foil+braid, LSZH jacket, BS 5308 Part 2, or custom colours and printing. Lead time is 15–25 working days for bulk OEM orders, with samples available in 5–7 working days. We support custom core counts, custom printing and private-label packaging.
