Cat6 Ethernet Cable - The Sweet Spot for New Structured Cabling

Ask any cabling installer what they put in a new building and the answer is Cat6 Ethernet cable. At 250 MHz it has twice the bandwidth of Cat5e, handles Gigabit Ethernet with generous headroom, supports PoE and PoE+ without heating issues, and avoids the Cat6a price premium that most offices do not need. Cat6 is the minimum category recommended by BICSI, the leading structured cabling association, and is the sweet spot where performance, cost and future-proofing meet. This page gives you the performance numbers, the shielding choices, the installation grades, and how Cat6 compares to Cat5e and Cat6a - so you can specify with confidence.

250 MHz

Twice the bandwidth of Cat5e (100 MHz).

1 Gbps · 100 m

Gigabit Ethernet with generous headroom.

PoE / PoE+

30 W per port - Wi-Fi APs, IP cameras.

UTP Standard

Unshielded is enough for most offices.

CM / CMR / CMP

Any installation grade available.

Global Standards

TIA/EIA-568-B.2-5, ISO/IEC 11801 Class E.

Cat6 vs Cat5e vs Cat6a - Why Cat6 Is the Sweet Spot

The three most common structured cabling categories sit on a cost/performance curve. Cat6 lands exactly where most new office installs need to be: enough bandwidth and headroom without paying for 10 Gbps that most offices will not use for a decade.

Cat5e

1 Gbps

100 MHz bandwidth

100 m · PoE+ max

• Cheapest option

• No headroom above Gigabit

• Budget retrofits only

Cat6 ★

1 Gbps

250 MHz bandwidth

100 m · PoE+ ready

• 2× Cat5e bandwidth

• Best headroom/cost ratio

• BICSI recommended minimum

Cat6A

10 Gbps

500 MHz bandwidth

100 m · PoE++ ready

• 10× data rate vs Cat6

• 50–70% cost premium

• Data centres, future-proofing

Parameter Cat5e Cat6 Cat6A
Bandwidth 100 MHz 250 MHz 500 MHz
Max data rate 1 Gbps 1 Gbps + headroom 10 Gbps
Max channel length 100 m 100 m 100 m
Conductor 24 AWG 23 or 24 AWG 23 AWG
NEXT @ 250 MHz Not specified ≥ 38.3 dB ≥ 38.3 dB
ACR @ 250 MHz Not specified ≥ 17.8 dB ≥ 18.0 dB
Insertion loss @ 250 MHz Not specified ≤ 21.4 dB ≤ 20.7 dB
PoE PoE & PoE+ PoE & PoE+ PoE & PoE+ & PoE++
Relative cost 100% ~120% ~180%

Rule of thumb
• Budget retrofit, existing Cat5 running → Cat5e only if you must
• New office install, best headroom/cost → Cat6 (recommended minimum)
• Data centre, PoE++, 10 Gbps future → Cat6a
• Save 50–70% vs Cat6A and still get 250 MHz headroom with Cat6

Cat6 Ethernet Cable - UTP, FTP or SFTP?

Cat6 Ethernet cable does not require shielding to meet its 250 MHz performance specification - unlike Cat7 and Cat8, which are always shielded. But shielding still has a place where electromagnetic interference (EMI) is present.

Type Structure EMI Rejection When to Use
UTP 4 twisted pairs, no shield Low Standard offices, schools, most indoor installs
FTP Al foil overall + tinned Cu drain wire Medium Near power cables, machinery, broadcast, HVAC motors
SFTP Al foil + tinned Cu braid shield High Industrial, high EMI, data centres with power density

Important - Shield grounding

A shield only works if it is grounded at one end only (typically the patch panel / switch end). Grounding at both ends creates a ground loop that cancels the shielding. All our FTP and SFTP Cat6 Ethernet cables come with a tinned copper drain wire for proper grounding.

FAQ

Q.What is Cat6 Ethernet cable?

Cat6 (Category 6) Ethernet cable is a twisted pair cable defined by TIA/EIA-568-B.2-5 and ISO/IEC 11801 Class E. It has a bandwidth of 250 MHz - twice the 100 MHz of Cat5e - and supports Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) up to 100 m. Cat6 uses 23 AWG or 24 AWG solid copper conductors, a tighter twist than Cat5e to control crosstalk, and improved NEXT (near-end crosstalk) and ACR (attenuation-to-crosstalk ratio) specifications at 250 MHz. It is the recommended minimum category for all new structured cabling installations.

Q.What is the difference between Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A?

Cat5e has 100 MHz bandwidth and 1 Gbps up to 100 m, costing less but with no headroom above Gigabit. Cat6 has 250 MHz bandwidth, 1 Gbps up to 100 m, better NEXT/ACR at higher frequencies and more headroom for future protocols - it is the sweet spot for new office installs. Cat6a has 500 MHz bandwidth and 10 Gbps up to 100 m, but costs about 50–70% more than Cat6 and requires 23 AWG. Use Cat5e only for budget retrofits, Cat6 for most new offices, and Cat6A for data centres, PoE++ (60/95 W) and future 10 Gbps needs.

Q.Is Cat6 Ethernet cable shielded or unshielded?

Cat6 Ethernet cable is most commonly UTP (unshielded twisted pair), which is perfectly adequate for offices and environments without strong electromagnetic interference. FTP (foil shield with drain wire) and SFTP (foil plus braid shield) versions are also available for installations near machinery, power cables, broadcast equipment or industrial environments where EMI would otherwise degrade performance. Unlike Cat7 and Cat8, Cat6 does not require shielding to meet its performance specification.

Q.Is Cat6 Ethernet cable PoE ready?

Yes, Cat6 Ethernet cable is fully PoE and PoE+ ready. PoE (IEEE 802.3af, 15.4 W per port) and PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at, 30 W per port) work on Cat5e and above, and Cat6 is a reliable choice because its lower resistance and tighter twist keep the temperature rise well within the PoE limits. For PoE++ (60 W on 4-pair) and especially PoE++ (95 W), Cat6a is recommended because the higher power density generates more heat and Cat6a has better thermal margins.

Q.What is the difference between CM, CMR and CMP Cat6 cable?

CM is the general-purpose rating for horizontal concealed runs in wall cavities and floors, tested to UL 1685. CMR is the riser rating for vertical runs between floors in riser shafts, tested to the more severe UL 1666 riser flame test. CMP is the plenum rating for installation in air-handling plenum spaces above ceilings, tested to UL 910 Steiner tunnel for both flame spread and smoke density - it is the most restrictive and most expensive. Always match the cable rating to where it will run in the building code.

Q.Should I choose UTP, FTP or SFTP for Cat6?

For most office and campus LANs, UTP is enough - the spline does most of the crosstalk work. Pick FTP (overall foil) when the cable runs near mains power, lifts or motors. Pick SFTP (foil plus pair braiding) for data centres, server rooms and heavy EMI industrial floors. We make all three constructions.
