Cat5e hits 100MHz. Cat6 more than doubles that to 250MHz by adding an internal plastic spline that physically separates the four twisted pairs. This spline reduces crosstalk, allowing Cat6 to support 10Gbps at longer distances than Cat5e. For most office, campus and small-data-centre LANs, Cat6 is the sweet spot: enough headroom for 10Gbps uplinks, full PoE support, and backward compatible with every Cat5e outlet you already own.

Q.What is the difference between Cat6 and Cat5e?

Cat6 doubles the bandwidth of Cat5e - 250MHz vs 100MHz - and adds an internal spline separator that keeps the four twisted pairs physically apart for tighter NEXT control. Cat6 carries 10Gbps up to 55m and 1Gbps at the full 100m, while Cat5e tops out at 1Gbps. Cat6 also uses a thicker 23AWG conductor vs Cat5e's 24AWG.

Q.Why does Cat6 have a plastic cross (spline) inside?

The spline separator physically isolates the four twisted pairs, which reduces crosstalk (NEXT) between adjacent pairs at high frequencies. It is the single biggest structural difference between Cat5e and Cat6 and is what lets Cat6 carry 250MHz bandwidth. All Doublewin Cat6 cables include the spline as standard.

Q.Does Cat6 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?

Yes, but only up to 55 metres in a single channel. Beyond 55m the cable drops back to 1Gbps. If you need 10Gbps at the full 100m, you need Cat6A. For most office and campus LANs, 55m of 10Gbps headroom is plenty for backbone runs and uplinks.

Q.Is Cat6 backward compatible with Cat5e?

Yes. Cat6 uses the same RJ45 connector and the same 100m channel model as Cat5e, so it plugs into existing Cat5e switches, patch panels and outlets. You can mix Cat6 and Cat5e in the same network - the channel will simply run at the speed of the lowest link, usually 1Gbps.

Q.Can Cat6 carry Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

Yes. Because we use 23AWG solid bare copper (thicker than Cat5e's 24AWG), the conductor DC resistance is lower, which is even better for PoE thermal performance. Our Cat6 supports IEEE 802.3af (15.4W), 802.3at (30W) and 802.3bt Type 3 (60W) on the full 100m channel - bare copper only, not CCA.

Q.Should I choose UTP, FTP or SFTP for Cat6?

For most office and campus LANs, UTP is enough - the spline does most of the crosstalk work. Pick FTP (overall foil) when the cable runs near mains power, lifts or motors. Pick SFTP (foil plus pair braiding) for data centres, server rooms and heavy EMI industrial floors. We make all three constructions.
