Why Shielded Security Alarm Cable Matters

Alarm signals are low-voltage and easily disrupted by electromagnetic noise. In commercial and industrial buildings, unshielded alarm cable can pick up interference that causes false alarms, missed events or unreliable data on addressable loops. A shielded alarm cable wraps the signal cores in a metallic screen that diverts interference to ground, keeping the signal clean and the security system dependable.

EMI & RFI Protection

Metallic shield blocks interference from mains, motors, VSDs and radio equipment.

01

Fewer False Alarms

Clean signal integrity reduces nuisance alarms and missed events.

02

Copper Braid Option

Tinned copper braid (~85% coverage) for flex and RFI protection.

03

Aluminium Foil Option

100% coverage foil with drain wire for general EMI protection.

04

                                                                                               Quality Control & Testing

Every reel is 100% tested before shipment. For screened cables we test shield continuity and resistance of the foil/braid screen and drain wire, insulation resistance between every pair of cores, and high-voltage withstand between all cores, the screen and the sheath. A sample of each batch is retained for full traceability. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) welcome.

Conductor Resistance

We verify conductor DC resistance to guarantee consistent signal transmission and avoid excessive voltage drop for long-distance alarm wiring.

Core-to-Core Insulation

Insulation resistance and high voltage withstand tests ensure no leakage or short-circuit risk between individual cores, even under continuous operation.

Batch Traceability

We reserve samples from every production batch, enabling full record tracking for quality audits, project acceptance and after-sales review.

Typical Applications

Shielded security alarm cable isolates low-voltage security signals from external electrical interference. It guarantees reliable signal transmission for burglar alarm sensors, PIR motion detectors and access control systems, especially for installations routed alongside power lines, rotating machinery and high-frequency electronic equipment.

Industrial Facilities

Security alarm and access control wiring in factories with variable speed drives, pumps and heavy machinery. The shielding prevents false alarms caused by strong electromagnetic noise.

Medical & Healthcare Premises

Burglary alarm, nurse call and access control wiring within hospitals and clinics. Works reliably near MRI, X-ray and other sensitive high-voltage medical equipment.

Commercial Utility Spaces

Gas detection and security alarm systems for commercial kitchens, plant rooms and boiler houses, where power circuits create heavy electrical interference.

Server & Communication Rooms

Security sensors and access control in data centres and comms cabinets. Shielding protects alarm signals from network hardware and power supply interference.

Retail & Public Buildings             Motion sensors, panic buttons and door contact wiring in shopping centres, supermarkets and public venues, running alongside lighting and power cabling.

FAQ

Q: What is shielded security alarm cable?

A:Shielded security alarm cable is a multi-conductor stranded copper alarm cable wrapped in a metallic shield - aluminium foil, tinned copper braid, or both - to protect low-voltage alarm signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI). A tinned copper drain wire provides an easy ground path for the shield.

Q: What is the difference between shielded and screened alarm cable?

A: There is no difference - "shielded" and "screened" are two terms for the same thing. "Shielded" is more common in North America, while "screened" is more common in the UK and Europe. Both refer to a cable with a metallic barrier (foil, braid or both) around the signal conductors.

Q: What is the difference between foil, braid and foil-plus-braid shielding?

A: Foil shielding (F/UTP) uses an aluminium/polyester wrap with a drain wire and gives 100% coverage with 35–50 dB attenuation. Braid shielding (S/UTP) uses a woven tinned copper braid giving ~85% coverage but 40–60 dB attenuation and better flexibility. Foil-plus-braid (SF/UTP) combines both for 100% coverage and 60–80 dB attenuation - maximum protection at higher cost.

Q:When should I use shielded alarm cable instead of unshielded?

A:Use shielded cable when runs pass near mains wiring, fluorescent lighting, motors, transformers, variable-speed drives, radio transmitters, industrial kitchens or medical equipment. In quiet residential environments, unshielded cable is usually sufficient and more cost-effective.

Q: How should the shield be grounded?

A:For most commercial installations, use single-point grounding: connect the drain wire to protective earth at the control panel end only. Grounding at both ends creates a ground loop that can inject 50/60 Hz noise. Use multi-point grounding only in high-frequency RFI environments (near radio transmitters, MRI, etc.).

Q: Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?

A: We are a manufacturer. Jiaxing Doublewin Cable Co., Ltd operates its own factory in Haiyan, Zhejiang, where all production - including shielding application and electrical testing - is done in-house. You are welcome to visit or request a live video tour.
