Fire Rated Alarm Cable - Circuit Integrity Cable for Fire Alarm & Life Safety Systems

A fire rated alarm cable is the cable that still carries a detection signal while the compartment around it is burning. This one wraps every conductor in a mica-glass barrier, is tested to BS 6387 categories C, W and Z and to EN 50200, and is built in 2 and 4 core from 0.8 to 2.5 mm² - the format a BS 5839-1 designer calls up for detection loops, sounder circuits and manual call points. As a fire rated alarm cable manufacturer, Jiaxing Doublewin Cable Co., Ltd produces this cable in-house in Haiyan, Zhejiang, China and supplies it in bulk worldwide.

What BS 5839-1 Clause 26.2 Actually Asks of the Cable

BS 5839-1 does not name a cable. It names a performance, and it puts that performance in Clause 26.2. The clause requires that cable for fire detection and alarm circuits maintain circuit integrity for the period the system is expected to keep working, and it splits the requirement into two grades: standard grade, tested to BS 7629-1, and enhanced grade, tested to BS 8434-2.

In practice this is the single question that decides your bill of materials. Standard grade is tested for 30 minutes in a 950 °C flame with a water spray applied. Enhanced grade is tested for 60 or 120 minutes with fire, water and mechanical shock applied together. If your specification says only fire rated alarm cable, it has answered the material question and left the grade question open - and the grade is what costs money.

Why Fire Rated Alarm Cable Is Essential for Life Safety

In a fire, ordinary cable burns through and stops working within minutes - exactly when you need the alarm system most. Fire rated alarm cable maintains circuit integrity for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, giving occupants time to evacuate and emergency services time to respond. A mica-tape barrier around each conductor keeps the copper insulated even as the polymer jacket burns away.

Mica Tape Fire Barrier - How Circuit Integrity Works

The secret to fire rated alarm cable is the mica-tape fire barrier. Mica is a mineral that does not burn and retains its insulating properties up to 1,000°C. When the polymer jacket and insulation burn away in a fire, the mica tape remains intact, keeping the copper conductors separated and the circuit alive.

Why Mica, Not Ceramic?

Some low-cost "fire rated" cables use ceramic filler instead of mica tape. Ceramic filler melts and drips at lower temperatures, losing insulation. Mica tape maintains its structure and insulation up to 1,000°C, which is why it is specified in EN 50200, IEC 60331 and UL 2196. All our fire rated cable uses genuine mica-tape wrap, not ceramic filler.

Conductor & Circuit Integrity Test

We conduct strict conductor and circuit integrity tests for every batch of fire rated alarm cable. These tests verify that the cable can keep working under high-temperature fire conditions, meeting BS5839 and BS6387 requirements for fire safety systems.

What We Can Show Your Inspector

Every production lot is routine-tested for conductor resistance, insulation resistance and high-voltage withstand. Separately from that, a sample from each lot goes for circuit-integrity testing against BS 6387 categories C, W and Z, and the retained sample stays in our store for 24 months. If your project needs a witnessed test, SGS, BV or TÜV can attend at our plant against a purchase order.

We do not print the words fire rated on a drum. Drums are marked with the standard, the category, the lot number and the conductor size, because that is what a site inspector reads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is fire rated alarm cable?

A:Fire rated alarm cable is a circuit-integrity cable designed to keep power and signal flowing during a fire. It uses a mica-tape fire barrier around each conductor that maintains insulation even as the polymer jacket burns away. This allows fire alarms, emergency lighting and evacuation systems to operate during a fire, giving occupants time to escape.

Q: What is the difference between fire rated, fire resistant and flame retardant?

A: Flame retardant means the cable self-extinguishes and does not spread flame (CPR EN 50575). Fire resistant means it maintains circuit integrity for a minimum time during fire (EN 50200 PH30+, IEC 60331). Fire rated is the umbrella term encompassing both - but in practice it usually means circuit-integrity cable with a fire barrier.

Q: Which fire standard should I specify: BS 5839, EN 50200, IEC 60331 or UL 2196?

A:It depends on the project's region and code. BS 5839-1 is the UK standard for fire detection systems. EN 50200 is the European circuit-integrity test. IEC 60331 is the international fire-resistance test (with shock and water variants). UL 2196 is the North American 2-hour fire + hose-stream test for NEC 760 circuits. We can manufacture to any of these standards.

Q:How does the mica tape work during a fire?

A: Mica is a mineral that does not burn and retains its insulating properties up to 1,000°C. When the polymer jacket and insulation burn away in a fire, the mica-tape wrap remains intact, keeping the copper conductors separated and the circuit alive. This is why mica tape (not ceramic filler) is specified in EN 50200, IEC 60331 and UL 2196.

Q: Can fire rated cable be used in walls and risers?

A:Yes, fire rated cable is specifically designed for permanent installation in walls, floors and risers. You must support it with fire-rated clips/hangers and seal all wall/floor penetrations with firestop compound to maintain the fire rating. Follow BS 5839, EN 54, NEC 760 or NFPA 72 as applicable.

Q: What is the MOQ and lead time?

A:MOQ is 10,000 m for standard and custom print. Samples take 7–10 working days, mass production 20–25 working days after sample approval. Fire test reports are available with each batch.
