BS 8519 Decides Which Circuits Need What

BS 5839-1 governs detection and alarm. It does not govern the power side. For fire-resistant power and control cable systems serving life safety, fire-fighting and other critical equipment, the governing document is BS 8519, which sorts applications into three categories by survival time: 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Read the project specification backwards from that category and the cable requirement falls out.

This is the distinction that a lot of supplier copy misses. If a buyer arrives at this page searching for fire resistant alarm cable, the useful answer is not another paragraph about mica tape. It is which category their circuit falls into, and what that does to the price per metre.

Why Fire Resistant Alarm Cable Is Critical for Life Safety

Standard alarm cable stops working the moment fire reaches it. Fire resistant alarm cable is engineered to keep critical circuits - fire detection, emergency lighting, smoke extraction, sprinkler control - running during a fire, giving occupants time to evacuate and giving fire-fighting systems time to respond. It is a legal or insurance requirement in most commercial and public buildings.

Circuit Integrity in Fire

Maintains stable power and signal transmission under direct 950°C flame exposure for 30–120 minutes.

01

EN 50200 & IEC 60331

Independently tested against globally recognised strict fire-resistance circuit integrity standards.

02

LSZH Jacket

Low-smoke, zero-halogen outer sheath, prevents dense smoke and toxic halogen gas release in fire scenarios.

03

Mica Tape Insulation

Mineral mica fire barrier protects copper conductors and preserves circuit continuity even when polymer insulation burns away.

Fire Resistant vs Flame Retardant - Understanding the Difference

These two terms are frequently confused but describe completely different performance. Choosing the wrong one can be fatal in a life-safety application.

Property Fire Resistant Cable Flame Retardant Cable
What it does Continues to carry current during a fire. Stops flame from spreading along the cable.
Circuit integrity in fire Yes - 30/60/120 minutes in direct flame. No - circuit fails when fire reaches cable.
Standard EN 50200 (PH30/60/120); IEC 60331 CPR EN 50575 (Eca–B2ca); IEC 60332
Typical use Life-safety circuits that must operate during fire. General building wiring, alarm signal loops.
Construction Mica/mineral tape + LSZH insulation + LSZH sheath. Flame-retardant PVC or LSZH jacket.
Cost Higher - engineered for extreme conditions. Lower.

 Quality Control & Testing

Every reel of fire resistant alarm cable undergoes full testing prior to shipment. The test scope covers fire circuit integrity, conductor DC resistance, inter-core insulation resistance and high-voltage withstand. Shielded variants also get shield continuity inspection. We retain batch samples to enable full traceability. Third-party inspection services from SGS, BV, TÜV are available on request. Our products meet BS 6387 CWZ requirements for BS 5839 fire alarm systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is fire resistant alarm cable?

A:Fire resistant alarm cable is a circuit-integrity cable that continues to carry power and signal to life-safety systems during a fire. It is tested to EN 50200 (PH30/PH60/PH120) and IEC 60331, and maintains circuit integrity for 30, 60 or 120 minutes in direct flame at 950°C. It is used in fire alarm loops, emergency lighting, smoke extraction and sprinkler control.

Q: What is the difference between fire resistant and flame retardant cable?

A: Flame-retardant cable stops flame from spreading along the cable but does not keep working in a fire. Fire-resistant cable actually continues to carry current while on fire, thanks to a mica-tape fire barrier wrapped around each conductor. For life-safety systems you must use fire resistant cable, not merely flame-retardant.

Q: What do PH30, PH60 and PH120 mean?

A: PH30, PH60 and PH120 are circuit-integrity grades from EN 50200. PH30 means the cable maintains circuit integrity for 30 minutes in direct flame at 950°C; PH60 for 60 minutes; PH120 for 120 minutes including mechanical shock and water spray. Higher grades are used in taller buildings and more critical systems.

Q:Should I choose PH30 or PH120?

A: Choose PH30 for standard fire alarm loops in small buildings with short evacuation times. Choose PH60 for emergency lighting and smoke extraction. Choose PH120 for high-rise buildings, hospitals, tunnels and any system that must operate for the full duration of a long evacuation and firefighting operation. Always verify against your local building code.

Q: Is fire resistant cable the same as LSZH cable?

A:No. LSZH describes the jacket material - it produces low smoke and no halogen gas when burned. LSZH does not mean the cable keeps working in a fire. Fire resistant cable uses LSZH for its jacket but also includes a mica-tape fire barrier so the circuit stays live. All fire resistant cables we supply use LSZH as standard.

Q: What standards apply to fire resistant alarm cable?

A: The key standards are EN 50200 (PH30/PH60/PH120 circuit integrity), IEC 60331 (international fire resistance), BS 5839 CWZ (UK life-safety code), and CPR EN 50575 (B2ca/Cca fire class). Our cables are tested to all of these and reports are provided with every order.
