A 2 core fire alarm cable is a two-conductor cable used to connect fire detection and alarm devices - smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual call points, sounders and addressable loop devices - to a fire alarm control panel. The two cores carry the loop signal and 24 V DC power (or the return path). A fire-resistant 2 core cable maintains circuit integrity for 30 to 120 minutes under fire (BS EN 50200 PH30 – PH120), so the alarm system continues to operate while occupants evacuate.

2 Core vs 4 Core Fire Alarm Cable - Which One to Specify
The core count is decided by how many conductors the field device needs, not by habit. The table below is the rule our OEM customers use on site.
When the circuit is single-function
• Dedicated sounder / strobe / bell circuit
• Single detector zone or call point
• Addressable loop wired as a single pair
• Signal-only or power-only runs
• Separate containment for signal and sounder

When the circuit is combined

Quality Control & Testing
Because 2 core fire alarm cable is a life-safety product, every reel is 100% tested before shipment. We test conductor resistance per IEC 60228, insulation resistance between the two cores, high-voltage withstand at 1500 V AC, and on fire-resistant grades we run the IEC 60331 fire-integrity test at the rated minutes (30/60/120). A retained sample from each batch and a CPR Declaration of Performance support full traceability.

Conductor Resistance: IEC 60228 on both cores.
Insulation Resistance:Core-to-core and core-to-shield.
IEC 60331 Fire Test:Circuit integrity 30/60/120 min (FR grade).
