Multi Core Fire Alarm Cable - 8 to 24 Core Riser & Backbone for Multi-Zone Fire Alarm Systems

Multi core fire alarm cable is a high-core-count fire alarm cable (8, 12, 16, 20 or 24 cores) used to carry multiple fire alarm loops, zones and sounder circuits up a building riser or along a backbone. One multi core fire alarm cable replaces many separate 2-core runs, simplifying installation, reducing conduit fill and giving a clean, traceable fire alarm backbone. Available in stranded copper with LSZH jacket, optional foil shield, and CPR EN 50575 fire performance. As a multi core fire alarm cable manufacturer, Jiaxing Doublewin Cable Co., Ltd produces these cables in-house in Haiyan, Zhejiang, China and supplies them in bulk worldwide.

Why Multi Core Fire Alarm Cable for Building Risers & Backbones

In multi-storey buildings, running many separate 2-core fire alarm cables up a riser creates congestion, makes tracing faults difficult and wastes conduit space. A multi core fire alarm cable bundles many circuits into one jacket - one pull up the riser, one cable to terminate at each floor, and a clean, traceable fire alarm backbone cable. It is the standard for hotels, hospitals, offices, schools and high-rise residential buildings.

One Pull, Many Circuits

2–24 fire alarm circuits in a single jacket.

01

Lower Conduit Fill

One multi-core cable uses less conduit than many 2-cores.

02

Clean Backbone

Single traceable riser - easy fault-finding.

03

Colour-Coded Cores

BS EN colour code for fast floor-by-floor termination.

When to Use Shielded Fire Alarm Cable - Environment Decision Guide

Not every fire alarm installation needs shielding. Use this guide to decide whether a shielded fire alarm cable is required for your project:

Environment / Condition EMI Risk Shielded Recommended? Reason
Residential / small office Low Optional Quiet environment; unshielded usually sufficient.
Near mains wiring (≥ 50mm) Medium Yes 50/60 Hz hum can cause false alarms.
Near emergency lighting ballasts High Yes Fluorescent/LED ballasts emit strong EMI.
Near fire pump / HVAC motors High Yes Motor start-up transients disrupt loop data.
Near VSD / inverter drives High Yes (foil+braid) High-frequency switching noise; use SF/UTP.
Near radio / telecom equipment High Yes RFI can corrupt addressable loop data.
Industrial plant / factory Very High Yes (foil+braid) Multiple noise sources; maximum shielding needed.
Hospital / data centre Medium-High Yes Critical life safety; signal integrity essential.

Shield Type & Fire Rating Combination Matrix

Shielded fire alarm cable combines EMI shielding with fire-safety performance. This matrix helps you match the right shield type to your fire rating needs - whether you need a standard foil shielded fire alarm cable for general commercial use, a braided shield fire alarm cable for high-RFI environments, or a combination with mica tape for circuit integrity.

Shield Type Jacket Option Fire Performance Best For
Foil (F/UTP) LSZH CPR Cca/Dca General commercial, addressable loops
Braid (S/UTP) LSZH CPR Cca/Dca Flexible runs, high RFI environment
Foil + Braid (SF/UTP)
LSZH CPR Cca/B2ca Industrial, VSD, extreme EMI
Foil + Mica Tape LSZH CPR + EN 50200 PH30 Fire-rated + shielded for critical circuits
Foil (F/UTP) PVC CPR Eca/Dca Cost-sensitive commercial, low smoke requirement

Shielding Does Not Replace Fire Rating

A shielded cable is not automatically fire-rated. The shield protects against EMI; the jacket material (LSZH) and any fire barrier (mica tape) provide fire performance. For life-safety circuits that need both EMI protection and circuit integrity, specify foil shield + mica tape + LSZH jacket.

                                                                                              Quality Control & Testing

Every reel is 100% tested before shipment. For multi core fire alarm cable, we test conductor resistance per IEC 60228 on every core, insulation resistance between every pair of cores, and high-voltage withstand between all cores and the sheath. Shield continuity is verified on shielded versions. A sample of each batch is retained for full traceability. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:What is multi core fire alarm cable?

A:Multi core fire alarm cable is a high-core-count fire alarm cable (typically 8, 12, 16, 20 or 24 cores) used to carry multiple fire alarm loops, zones and sounder circuits in a single jacket. It is the standard cable for building risers and fire alarm backbones.

Q: When should I use multi core instead of 2-core fire alarm cable?

A:Use multi core fire alarm cable for risers, backbones and any run that carries multiple circuits between two points (e.g. panel to floor distribution). Use 2-core cable for the final drop from the riser to individual devices.

Q: How many cores do I need for my building?

A: A rough guide: 8 core for 2–4 floor buildings, 12 core for 5–8 floors, 16 core for 8–12 floors or hospitals, 20 core for high-rises, 24 core for towers and campus buildings. Add 2–4 spare cores for future expansion.

Q:Why is multi core better than running multiple 2-core cables?

A: One multi core cable is faster to pull, uses less conduit, is easier to trace, gives you spare cores in the same jacket, and is usually cheaper overall when you factor in labour and conduit cost.

Q: What colour are the cores in a 12 or 24 core cable?

A: We follow the BS EN colour code: 8 core = Red, Black, White, Green, Brown, Blue, Orange, Yellow. 12 core adds Grey, Pink, Turquoise, Violet. 16+ cores use white/blue and white/green bicolour combinations.

Q:Should I choose shielded or unscreened multi core fire alarm cable?

A:Unscreened is fine for most risers. Use foil-shielded multi core in buildings with high EMI (near VSDs, motors, radio equipment) or where the local code/spec requires it.
