Shielded Fire Alarm Cable - EMI-Protected Fire Alarm Loops for Noisy Environments

Shielded fire alarm cable is a multi-conductor fire alarm cable wrapped in a metallic shield - aluminium foil, tinned copper braid, or both - to protect fire alarm signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI). A tinned copper drain wire provides an easy ground path. It is essential in commercial and industrial buildings where fire alarm loops run near mains wiring, emergency lighting, fire pumps, HVAC motors, VSDs or radio equipment. Available in 2 to 24 cores with LSZH jacket and CPR EN 50575 fire performance. As a shielded fire alarm cable manufacturer, Jiaxing Doublewin Cable Co., Ltd produces this cable in-house in Haiyan, Zhejiang, China and supplies it in bulk worldwide.

Why Shielded Fire Alarm Cable Prevents False Alarms & Signal Loss

Fire alarm systems use a small set of standard core counts because every device has predictable wiring needs. 2/4/6 core fire alarm cable covers virtually all fire detection and notification devices - from a simple 2-wire addressable loop to a 6-core sounder-beacon combination. Using standard core counts simplifies installation, reduces inventory and ensures colour-coded consistency across a project.

EMI / RFI Protection

Prevents false alarms from mains, motors, VSDs and radio noise.

When to Use Shielded Fire Alarm Cable - Environment Decision Guide

Not every fire alarm installation needs shielding. Use this guide to decide whether a shielded fire alarm cable is required for your project:

Environment / Condition EMI Risk Shielded Recommended? Reason
Residential / small office Low Optional Quiet environment; unshielded usually sufficient.
Near mains wiring (≥ 50mm) Medium Yes 50/60 Hz hum can cause false alarms.
Near emergency lighting ballasts High Yes Fluorescent/LED ballasts emit strong EMI.
Near fire pump / HVAC motors High Yes Motor start-up transients disrupt loop data.
Near VSD / inverter drives High Yes (foil+braid) High-frequency switching noise; use SF/UTP.
Near radio / telecom equipment High Yes RFI can corrupt addressable loop data.
Industrial plant / factory Very High Yes (foil+braid) Multiple noise sources; maximum shielding needed.
Hospital / data centre Medium-High Yes Critical life safety; signal integrity essential.

Shield Type & Fire Rating Combination Matrix

Shielded fire alarm cable combines EMI shielding with fire-safety performance. This matrix helps you match the right shield type to your fire rating needs - whether you need a standard foil shielded fire alarm cable for general commercial use, a braided shield fire alarm cable for high-RFI environments, or a combination with mica tape for circuit integrity.

Shield Type Jacket Option Fire Performance Best For
Foil (F/UTP) LSZH CPR Cca/Dca General commercial, addressable loops
Braid (S/UTP) LSZH CPR Cca/Dca Flexible runs, high RFI environment
Foil + Braid (SF/UTP)
LSZH CPR Cca/B2ca Industrial, VSD, extreme EMI
Foil + Mica Tape LSZH CPR + EN 50200 PH30 Fire-rated + shielded for critical circuits
Foil (F/UTP) PVC CPR Eca/Dca Cost-sensitive commercial, low smoke requirement

Shielding Does Not Replace Fire Rating

A shielded cable is not automatically fire-rated. The shield protects against EMI; the jacket material (LSZH) and any fire barrier (mica tape) provide fire performance. For life-safety circuits that need both EMI protection and circuit integrity, specify foil shield + mica tape + LSZH jacket.

                                                                                              Quality Control & Testing

Every reel is 100% tested before shipment. For shielded fire alarm cable, we test conductor resistance per IEC 60228 on every core, insulation resistance between every pair of cores, high-voltage withstand between cores and sheath, and shield continuity - confirming the drain wire has continuous electrical contact with the foil or braid along the full length. A sample of each batch is retained for full traceability. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is shielded fire alarm cable?

A:Shielded fire alarm cable is a multi-conductor fire alarm cable wrapped in a metallic shield - aluminium foil, tinned copper braid, or both - to protect fire alarm signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI). It includes a tinned copper drain wire for grounding. It is used in commercial and industrial buildings where fire alarm loops run near mains wiring, motors, VSDs or radio equipment.

Q: When do I need shielded fire alarm cable?

A: You need shielded fire alarm cable when the loop runs near mains wiring, emergency lighting ballasts, fire pumps, HVAC motors, VSD/inverter drives, radio equipment or industrial machinery. In quiet residential environments, unshielded cable is usually sufficient. If in doubt, use shielded - it costs slightly more but eliminates false alarm risk.

Q: Foil or braid shield - which is better?

A: Foil shield (F/UTP) provides 100% coverage and is best for general EMI from mains and lighting. Braid shield (S/UTP) provides ~85% coverage, is more flexible and is better for RFI and moving applications. Foil+braid (SF/UTP) gives maximum protection for extreme environments with VSDs or industrial machinery.

Q:How do I ground the shield?

A: Standard colour codes: 2-core = Red & Black; 4-core = Red, Black, White, Green; 6-core = Red, Black, White, Green, Blue, Yellow. Custom colour sequences available on request.

Q: Is shielded fire alarm cable also fire rated?

A:The shield provides EMI protection, not fire rating. The fire performance comes from the LSZH jacket (CPR EN 50575) and any fire barrier (mica tape). For circuits that need both EMI protection and circuit integrity during fire, specify foil shield + mica tape + LSZH jacket.

Q:Can I use shielded cable for addressable loops?

A:Yes - in fact, shielded cable is recommended for addressable loops in noisy environments because the digital loop data is sensitive to EMI. Use 2-core shielded twisted pair with single-point grounding at the panel.
